Symfonie nr. 2 werd in 1983 in opdracht van de "Big Ten Band Directors Association" opgericht. Ik werd gevraagd om een groot werk te schrijven voor een volledige band. De Symfonie ging in première op de CBDNA-conventie van 1987 in Evanston, Illinois. De uitvoerende groep was de gecombineerde Symphonic Band en Symphonic Wind Ensemble van Northwestern University onder leiding van John P. Paynter.
